Michael Phelps Smokes Pot? Unthinkable!
by SAB on Feb.05, 2009, under News
Why is it people throw such a fit when they find out celebrity X smokes pot? Ever since the news broke of a photo of Michael Phelps smoking a bong, conservatives and the generally uptight have whined and moaned that such a great American hero (and general stud) could choose to smoke up. Now USA Swimming has suspended Phelps, albeit for a totally pointless, wrist slapping 3 months.
Phelps issued an apology for the incident, but everyone is missing the point that even though he’s smoked pot in the past (and may even be a regular) his behavior didn’t stop Phelps from becoming one of the most successful Olympians in history. I would have rather seen Phelps say “Smoking pot didn’t stop me from winning 8 Gold Medals.”
Pot is one of those drugs that is bad because it’s illegal, and not illegal because it’s bad. If you’re caught drunk in public you’re thrown in a drunk tank, and if you get caught driving you may have your license taken away, but if you’re caught high or even (gasp!) carrying pot on your person you can get serious fines and even signifigant jail time. One of the reasons the United States has more citizens in jail than any other nation on Earth is due to our hypocritical, puritanical drug policies.
To add insult to injury hardly any news stories have posted the pictures of Phelps that I actually want to see. To rectify that siutation, I offer the following:
You’re welcome, Internet.
