Called Ruth and George. George Died.

ringHemmingway was once challenged to write an entire story with only 6 words.  His result?

“For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”

Simple, but it invites the reader to invent their own story, their own intrepretation. Perhaps even an interpretation from their own life experiences, making the tale even more meaningful.  Indeed, Hemmingway was reported to consider “Baby Shoes” one of his best works.

I was reminded of Hemmingway’s 6 word story this afternoon when I had to call a customer at home.  I asked for Ruth or George.  There was an uncomfortble pause, and the elderly lady on the other end of the phone said “You can’t talk to George, he died.”

What could I do?  I simply apologized and moved on.  I put a memo on the customer’s file:

“Called Ruth and George. George Died.
