Don't Use The Term "Gay" For "Bad"

by SAB on Jul.20, 2009, under News

In GURPS terms, you get an immediate and probably permanent -3 reaction from me (and most other gay people) if you use “Gay” as a pejorative.  For example:

“I just got fired.”

“That’s pretty gay.”

A Barista at Starbucks recently told me something similar was gay while he was making a drink, and I’ve pretty much written him off my list of people I care about – I give him the cold shoulder now.  Now, if the Barista was saying “Rufus Wainwright is pretty gay” (he is of course) in a positive sense, then I could see it.  But the kind of negative connotation implied by his usage basically says “being gay is a negative.”

Harsh? Maybe. But to me using the “Gay” negatively is like using the “N” word.  It’s unacceptable, always.

I have to admit I got that habit back when I was last in new jersey visiting my relatives. Reading this, i will be more conscious about it.

I’m 44 and I get this. Why can’t I break my 17 year old of using the word gay as a pejorative. Maybe its because I have gay friends and colleges. And he just hears the same old thing at school, “That’s gay!”. It just frustrates the hell out of me.

If you kid meets any gay friends along his travels, odds are he’ll stop using the term. I usually drive it home to people by reminding them that it’s as bad as the “N’ word. Good luck with your kid!

Is god willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent.
Is god both able and willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him god?
